Widely celebrated as one of the greatest countertenors of his generation, Iestyn Davies rejoins Dunedin Consort in 2020 for a performance of Bach’s most intimate church cantatas. From the elegant poetry of Vergnügte Ruh, beliebte Seelenlust, BWV 170, to the startling intensity of Widerstehe doch der Sünde, BWV 54, these cantatas are some of Bach’s finest. They are paired here with works by two of Bach’s most important predecessors, Heinrich Schütz and Philipp Heinrich Erlebach, whose music glows with the same easy contrapuntal fluidity and expressive detail. Bach’s sparkling Orchestral Suite No. 1 completes the programme, painting a rich and intricate picture of the German Baroque.
